INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION "ENDANGERED SPECIES"
Closing date: August 15, 2022
The 29th Calicomix International Festival 2022 has "MEXICO" as a guest country and in the activities it will carry out,
and has created the exhibition "Endangered Species"
that deals with an invitation through a call to illustrators and cartoonists from all over the world.
world to make images of catrinas and alebrijes of threatened species including the human being and the little attention we are giving
to the care of the planet and the point of no return of the extinction of much of life.
In this dangerous and expensive adventure of civilization, humanity will necessarily have to return to observe the nature from which it arose.
This time with enough experience to understand that the power of knowledge and experience to solve planetary life and coexistence
with other species will be the only thing that will allow the survival of the human being.
We invite artists from all over the world to participate in this contest inspired and guided by the contributions of José Guadalupe Posada
and Pedro Linares López where we will award the three best works.
We have united the Mexican popular tradition with environmental alarms to give it that encouraging element of celebrating
the lives of the beings with whom we live, showing how art affects our way of interpreting and expressing ourselves.
We invite Posada and Linares to meet these extraordinary Latin American artists who will provide us with elements for our "Endangered Species" exhibition.
Coinciding our event with the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the birth of the engraver, illustrator
and caricaturist José Guadalupe Posada, famous for his drawings and engravings on death.
Passionate about political cartoons. He developed new printing techniques. He worked and founded important newspapers. Consolidating
the festivity of the day of the dead, for its interpretations of the daily life and attitudes of the Mexican through the skulls acting as common people.
The validity of the work of José Guadalupe Posada is clearly identified in a series of creations achieved in recent decades,
based on various media and techniques. Posada beyond his death, and his dead, lives and is an important presence and cultural expression of Mexican art.
We add in this call the fantastic vision of Pedro Linares, with his imaginary figures that represent animals and monsters.
This Mexican artist collaborator of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, at an early age suffered from very strong fevers that led him to have overwhelming nightmares.
These visions transported him to a wild environment and in contact with nature, and everything around him, whether it was a plant,
a rock or a cloud, was transformed into very colorful and strangely shaped animal forms: dogs with wings, fanged birds and innumerable grotesque figures.
They all continuously and obsessively pronounced the same word: “Alebrijes, alebrijes”, an incomprehensible term without any meaning.
When he overcame his illness, Linares shared these fantastic hallucinations with his family, and began to reproduce
the figures from his nightmares in cardboard and stone, molding and decorating them just as he had imagined them.
